Roadkill
Opportunistic eagles
stake a claim near the off-ramp,
in the wetlands near the winding Yahara.
Just south of the beltline
the eagle’s nest is exposed,
outlined by early buds.
The tree that is honored to hold it,
tall, proud, unbroken among tall trees.
An upside down igloo of branches,
no mere twigs—that nest
is the size of a VW Beetle.
What feathers this nest?
Across the grade,
a hot spot for panhandlers
down on their luck;
what they wouldn’t give
for a night of shelter,
a crib-sized mattress
in home with a view.
Down the road, a casino.
Every manner of wheeled vehicle
whizzes by, speeds over the posted limit.
Semis, cement trucks, buses,
every kind of thing attached to a hitch,
pulled against its wheels.
I once saw a single eagle here—
he swooped from a nearby tree,
picked up a speeding rabbit.
I was grateful for the long red light.
The driver behind me honked
and broke the spell.
