These Quilted Days
These Quilted Days
Like scraps my grandmother stitched,
empty pocketed, 1930s prints,
threadbare before they were even claimed
for quilt sqaures,
edged fabric, a fringe of strings
holds calicoed flower patches together.
The stack of angles and sharp points,
waits, now almost one hundred years
to be pieced together,
carried across state lines, carried back
and forth between cities, countrysides.
The light of this morning sifts through the tweeds,
the gaberdines, and there:
four holes where a button
had been removed, the button
saved for another time.
A precious chip of shell, as lucky as a penny
from a time when no spare pennies
could be found near alleys.
These days pennies, once again sparse,
too costly to mint, they say.
These days, bordered in green,
we piece our lives together.
These days, shaped and shapeless.
These quilted days, stack one upon another.
These days wait to be stitched together.
When have we ever earned our fortune?
- Mary Louise Peters✨Love & Light for Today:
“One day at a time – this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful it will be worth remembering.”
- Ida Scott Taylor
