Volta Rose 
-ode to the line where everything turns-

It’s no mystery that one day I write
and rant against the chaos 

and the next day, an ode to quiet witness,
to the goodness of people, to mystery .

Day 3? Yes, a third thing 
like praise to the chocolate mint 

that has taken over the patch of roses 
who themselves are tossing petals 

as we speak—rose petals at this hour, 
like an errant flower girl who is in love 

with the way each petal rides on air, 
and without having the technical words, 

notices aerodynamics, 
sees magic that holds a petal like a shell

to the ear of wind; more petals are tossed,
see how many land as small boats

floating on a calm river. And that brings me back to goodness and people, 

chocolate mint in the vase of roses
picked for the joy of bringing scarlet 

and yellow and pink blossoms, purple-edged leaves together, for smooth stalks

beside thorn sprays. Coexisting; 
this sight transcends the chaos.

This is a small lesson in how to survive.
Scents imbue, whisper, this how to thrive.
